Stress happens when we lose control of our lives. We keep going and going with no idea how to stop (most of the time). Eventually, we end up burning out. We put an immense amount of pressure on ourselves. While we want to be the best we can be in our lives, should it be at the cost of our sanity?
What good is having success if you are burnt out by the time you get it? I think this is a question a lot of us don’t ask ourselves. Are you really doing this for you or for someone else? A lot of times, we want to measure up to not only our expectations, but the expectations of others. When you think about it, these are self-created pressures.
Oh yes..that includes your folks. The same parents who had dreams of you becoming a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. Trust me, I know the feeling and I have at times fallen to these make believe pressures myself. Let’s be honest, no one can really make you do anything you don’t want to do. The problem is, we all want to be accepted and we care way too much about what others think of us. It’s funny to think that when we have a unique idea, we run to others to ask them what they think. The same people who are trying to figure out their lives just like us.
The sad part is sometimes the ideas we have get shot down and that’s where it ends. We have let the opinions of others dictate what we can and cannot do. No! Your idea wasn’t crazy, it was crazy amazing. Unfortunately, you don’t think you can do it and you think you will look crazy for even trying. So what? Every person that is successful today was probably crazy to someone. They don’t think you’re crazy because the idea is bad, they think you’re crazy because they don’t think they can do it. If they can’t do it, there is no way you can..right? Wrong! Get that notion out of your head. If you have an idea, run with it. At least you know you tried, unlike the many people out there who are too scared to.
Now, when we decide to do something we really want do to, we continue to put more pressure on ourselves. I mean, you had this crazy idea and you decided to run with it. If you fail, you might be told, “I told you so.” Oh well! It is you life and you decide what you want to do and when you want to do it. You go at a pace that best fits you. We were not put on this earth to please others and make them feel comfortable. Stop with the pressures and the crazy timelines you have set for yourself. Slow down and really reevaluate everything. Figure out what really matters to you and eliminate what doesn’t. A lot of the stress and chaos we have in our lives is due to wanting to please others.
Even if you’re doing what you truly love, it is important to take your time with it. You will achieve the same goal no matter what pace you go at it. The only thing is, if you go at a slower pace, you will enjoy the journey a lot more. No one is their best self when they are stressed out and out of whack.
